Dr. Ammie Akin

Picture
Dr. Ammie Akin joined the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy, and Technology Studies (ELPTS) in 2020 as Clinical Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership.  She is a member of the leadership for character team, which is part of the Center for the Study of Ethical Development at The University of Alabama.  She is a leadership facilitator and develops programs for aspiring and current principals and superintendents. Dr. Akin also assists with The University of Alabama Superintendents’ Academy.

Dr. Akin is a career educator with a background spanning all levels, from elementary to high school and college. She has served as a teacher, an administrator and as an assistant superintendent. Throughout her career, her greatest strength has been mentoring teachers to leadership roles.

Dr. Akin has taught on adjunct staffs — both undergraduate and graduate level courses — at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and Samford University. Her courses of study included methods for teaching math and graduate level courses for future administrators and developing teacher leaders.

Through connections at UAB, Dr. Akin ventured to a new leadership role at the non-profit level. She was hired to develop curriculum as the executive director for an organization committed to improving literacy for elementary students. In that position, she wrote, implemented and trained local service providers on a scientifically based curriculum to stop the summer reading slide. The program was a success and is still active across the state of Alabama.

Dr. Akin completed her undergraduate training at the College of Education at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She earned a Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership at Samford University. Her dissertation consisted of an independent research study in the area of constructivist mathematics and student engagement. The study was timely as it paralleled the state’s shift to common core math. Her work was placed into practice in assisting her faculty and district in transitioning to a more engaging and student-centered approach.

Dr. Akin’s passion for education is expansive and without boundaries. She has been instrumental in the launch of two highly successful non-profit organizations. As the board president for Rising Hope Academy, she has helped launch, staff and develop curriculum for the trauma informed school. She has also served as board president for Unless U, a non-profit for adults with developmental disabilities, many of whom are former students from her first teaching position at Hoover High School. More recently, she was invited to join the Board of Advisors for The University of Alabama Adapted Athletics, sponsors of competitive college sports in men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball and tennis.

Dr. Akin and her husband, Will, manage a fun-filled trio of boys — Jack (10), George (8) and Henry (4) – who can often be spotted on water-skis challenging the wake of their pontoon on Lake Tuscaloosa.
